Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and improve overall health. Among Mr. Pilates’ earliest students were ballet dancers in New York City. As in dance, pilates uses the rhythm of the breath to set the dynamics of the movement. There is an aesthetic in dance that coexists in pilates exercise, as both stress the excellence of movement. With an emphasis on the breath, pilates allows you to get centered, calm your nerves and move more fully.
